REGINA - The celebrations in Saskatchewan to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III moved to Government House on May 13.
That was the date for the celebration of the Coronation at Government House, hosted by Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty.
The event included greetings from Mirasty as well as speeches and the highlight: musical presentations by Saskatchewan singer-songwriter Jeffery Straker.
In his remarks, Mirasty indicated he and his wife Donna would be heading this week to London, England, for their first meeting with the new King.
The afternoon at Government House was open to the public, with plenty of food, commemorative cookies, souvenirs, and other items. Chokeberry seedlings were given out courtesy of the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse. Visitors also got to see the various regular displays at Government House.
Among the items being shown to visitors on this occasion was the Black Rod, the item used when members of the Royal Family or their representative (the Lieutenant Governor) are led into the Legislative Assembly. The Black Rod was presented to Saskatchewan by then-Prince Charles in 2012 during his visit to the province.
There were also plenty of displays, including ones on “Coronations and Government House” and “Treaties and the Crown.” A big screen TV was set up to show video from last week’s coronation ceremonies from Westminster Abbey in London on May 6.
The Government House commemorations are just one of several held in Saskatchewan and around the country and world marking the coronation of the new King. On May 5, a Coronation Parade was held at the front of the Saskatchewan Legislature to mark the occasion, and there have been a number of local events organized in Saskatchewan communities as well.
