2023 Sask Winter Games are now on

Opening ceremonies take place in Regina to kick off Saskatchewan Winter Games.

REGINA - The Saskatchewan Winter Games are now on in Regina.

Opening ceremonies took place Sunday night at the University of Regina campus.

The opening included the introduction of teams from across Saskatchewan with over 1400 athletes set to compete in 16 different sports categories. The day also saw the culmination of the Torch Relay that made its way across Regina.

This is the 50th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Games and the first time the event has ever been held in Regina. The Winter Games were originally slated to take place in 2022 but was delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The host committee had spent the past two and a half years preparing for the event, which runs from Feb. 19 to 25.

In addition to the competitions, the Games will include a Culture Festival running between 6:30 to 9 p.m. from Feb. 21 to 23 at the University of Regina Education Auditorium. On Wednesday, Feb. 22 will be a keynote speech from Sydney Daniels of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak First Nation, who is the first-ever female NHL Scout for the Winnipeg Jets. She will be joined there by her father, NHL veteran Scott Daniels, with her speech to be followed by a panel discussion on Truth and Reconciliation in Sport.
