Wilkie pool, cautious optimism and wary apprehension

It's no secret that the longevity and continued viability of Wilkie's pool is a big concern.

WILKIE--How long will it last? Apprehension and concern are some of the sentiments surrounding the opening of the Wilkie pool for the summer.

Pool manager Kabri Sittler says, “The pool has been nearing the end of its life for a few years now and we are in dire need of a new pool as soon as possible.”

Sittler says applications have been submitted for grants as well as fundraising continuing in the community, which includes the upcoming June date for the Johner Boys concert.

“So far, things are going smooth, but it’s still early. The pool needs a new paint job as well as some deck repairs and simple maintenance repairs,” adds Sittler.

The plan, and hope, is to have the pool open by June 9 but with the structure being so aged, Sittler says they will prepare for some mechanical issues. Sittler affirms her and the pool team are excited for the season, nonetheless.

Stiller will be joined by lifeguards: Kylie Delainey, Mathew Escorpiso, Jayna Bottoroff, Tina Elder and Kierra Babchuk and have three applications for junior guards, which will help, as last season hours of the pool operation had to be reduced due to staff shortages.

A water polo clinic is being planned in August and the Wilkie pool team is hoping to bring back the parent and tot program. There will be three swimming lesson sets offered as well as private lessons.
