WILKIE — Another youth sports program has begun in Wilkie. The Wilkie Soccer program has been a part of recreation options for children in Wilkie for a number of years. The season started May 4 and will continue until June 26.
Program co-ordinator, Ryan Kobelsky, tells the Press-Herald / SASKTODAY.ca , “Wilkie Soccer has 75 players registered this, and eight volunteer coaches.”
The program includes one team of each in the divisions of U15, U13, U11 and U9. The U7 and U5 group have two teams for each, as well as nine players in the tots program.
“We are very lucky to have access to the fields at Norman Carter and McLurg to run our program on,” says Kobelsky.
For the 2022 season, new flags and 25 brand new soccer balls were purchased for the program.
Kobelsky also states that they will not be participating in or hosting tournaments this year as their idea is to let everyone get back into the swing of things. However, teams will be playing games against Cut Knife, Macklin and Unity.
Playing soccer improves co-ordination, cardio health and flexibility as well as offering children the outdoor activity with organized sport. Soccer is a relatively easy activity for kids and keeps them moving. With the growing fan base for soccer resulting from people see Canadian successes on international stages, it has become a popular option for youth sports programming.
The same skills that are needed in school, and family life is a huge part of soccer and that is team success requires teamwork.
All of these benefits combine to provide an outdoor activity that is beneficial to children’s mental and physical well-being, and various development qualities, in addition to providing some exciting live game action for parents and fans.
