UNITY — Wildfires in Kelowna, specifically the McDougall Creek fire, caused the cessation and subsequent cancellation of 15U Western Canadian AA baseball championships in Kelowna, B.C.
Connor Ralston, of Unity and Wilkie players Kaden Sperle and Austin Sittler were picked up by the Lumsden Cubs 15U baseball team to compete at Western Canadian Championships in Kelowna, Aug 17-20.
While the team posted on their Facebook page about the preparation for the event and disappointment with not having a chance to compete for a title, they also clearly indicated that it was nothing compared to the seriousness of what was occurring in Kelowna, noting their thoughts and prayers for those people’s lives and their property that were threatened or burning to the ground.
The team played only 4.5 innings in the tournament, initially postponed due to heavy smoke and then cancelled due to raging wildfires around Kelowna.
These local players and families were hoping for a far different memorable experience from their Western Canadian championship experience but acknowledged many times that ball is not as important as what’s happening in Kelowna.
We have not yet heard if travel was affected or challenged for those returning home to Saskatchewan.
