CIBC’s Run for the Cure – personal for Wilkie branch

Fundraising began with a kickoff hot dog barbecue behind the Wilkie bank Aug. 12.

WILKIE -- For staff at the Wilkie branch of CIBC, Run for the Cure – Canada’s largest single-day, volunteer-led event in support of breast cancer research – got personal this year.

With local resident Carolyn Eremko facing her own breast cancer battle and $20,000 in drug costs not covered by insurance or the province, Wilkie CIBC staff are organizing a number of fundraising activities leading up to the run Oct. 1.

Staff member Helen Urlacher said the Wilkie branch will be splitting funds raised, with half going to help Eremko with her expenses and half being contributed to the 2023 CIBC Run for the Cure total.

Fundraising began with a kickoff hot dog barbecue behind the Wilkie bank Aug. 12. Along with hot dogs and drinks, people had the opportunity to pay $5 to pie the CIBC employee of their choice.

The bank will also host a silent auction, closing Sept. 17. Items can be viewed in branch and contributions are still being welcomed.

The women will also hold a local run/walk Oct. 1, and pledge forms are available at the bank for individuals to fundraise on their own.

CIBC’s Run for the Cure has raised a total of $462 million to fund breast cancer research projects since 1992. While there has been a 49 per cent decrease in breast cancer mortality rates since the mid 1980s, breast cancer is still one of the leading causes of death in women. It is estimated that one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.
