Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald Blast to the past

A look back at 50 years ago and 20 years ago from the Unity Northwest Herald and the Wilkie Press archives

Unity Council shelved the water treatment plant. The local government board would not allow the financing on the basis council had desired.

Municipal Affairs Minister Everett Wood, minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Program, announced changes in the membership of the Unity Housing Authority. Dorothy Whiting and Gordon Humphreys would serve three-year terms, replacing Betty Hepting and Leslie Johnson.

The Wilkie Constituency Liberal Association held a successful fun spiel, with 27 rinks taking part. Louis Sloboda's rink from Wilkie won the fun spiel.

Wilbur Latimer of Wilkie was presented a public service award in recognition of his service to the R.M. of Buffalo. Latimer served on the Union Hospital Board from 1956 to 1971. Latimer received recognition from Roy Carpenter, reeve of the R.M. of Buffalo.

The Town of Unity agreed to a minimum tax of $450 for land and improvements.

The Town also agreed that a commitment of money should be set aside towards skating and curling rink projects. Town council voted to put $210,000 into the two projects, of which approximately $150,000 would go toward the skating arena and an additional $60,000 toward the curling rink.

The Wilkie Figure Skating Club once again sponsored the annual Carnival Queen contest with Calinda Schmidt, Jacalyn Sieben and Brittany Bachman as contestants. The winner would be announced March 15 during the Skating Carnival.
