WILKIE--The Town of Wilkie would like to wish assistant administrator Sandra Beckett a very happy retirement. Sandra will officially be retired at the end of October and is looking forward to spending more time with her family. The town of Wilkie would also like to welcome new staff member, Bobby MacCuish, who has joined the management team as public works manager. Town council and staff look forward to working with Bobby.
Works is almost complete on the downtown 2nd Avenue Park. The town received a grant through Western Economic Diversification Canada in the amount of $47,681 which represents 75 per cent of the costs of developing the downtown park. Developing a downtown green area was one item that was brought forward during a strategic planning session in 2021. Work already completed includes installing a boardwalk, electrical work, installation of sheds, gazebos and landscaping. Items yet to be completed include the installation of picnic tables, lights and flower planters. Town council’s goal for this project is to brighten up the downtown and provide a place where events can take place during many months of the year. It will also be a space that residents can use every day while visiting the downtown.
The arena ice at the Saskcan Community Center has been installed and ready in time for the Wilkie Outlaws annual hockey camp. The arena will once again be busy this winter with the Wilkie Outlaws, minor hockey, recreational hockey, public skating and shinny. Residents can also rent the ice if they wish for a family get together or birthday. To book ice you can call the town office at 306-843-2692.
Congratulations to Prairie Branches Enterprises on their grand opening of the new downtown office space. Prairie Branches has been integral to our community for many years; offering opportunities and security to those of us with special needs as well as being a large employer in our town. The transformation of an underused building into a welcoming environment that works for them and their clients is a great addition to our downtown core. Everyone at Prairie Branches, both clients and staff, can feel more connected to the community and likewise the community to them. The board and staff are to be congratulated on the achievement of their vision and all of the hard work they have invested to see it through.
