The future of Kerrobert football got brighter

It took a combined community effort to successfully fundraise for the permanent lights now being used at Kerrobert Football Field

KERROBERT — Sept. 16 was an amazing night in Kerrobert as the Kerrobert Football Association officially opened the new permanent lights at their football field.

An event flavour developed with food options and vendors as well Kerrobert Composite School SLC students painting faces, the Kerrobert Kinsmen cooking burgers and a sponsor guaranteed a $1,000 50/50 jackpot.

The junior flag and tackle teams got to experience a game as part of the event, followed by the senior Kerrobert Rebels.

Prior to the Rebels games, thanks were given and history on how the project went from dream to reality with the ribbon officially cut on the project. KCS principal Candice Kraft was tasked with cutting the ribbon.

Kerrobert Rebels gave the crowd plenty to cheer about, winning the game against Macklin by a score of 54-38, now putting the team in the two win column to start their season.

Kerrobert Football Association was formed when football enthusiasts and community members decided to combine efforts to continue to build the Kerrobert football programs in both minor and high school football programs, thus the KFA was born Oct. 6, 2021.

The group began actively fundraising for permanent lights at the community’s football field. The organization got approval from the school division, sourced and priced materials needed to complete the project and set to the task of securing enough funding to get power to the field and erect permanent lights. With such a short season and reduced available daylight hours in fall, the permanent lights enable all groups to play on the same day, while also providing other opportunities for the school to offer outdoor activities throughout the year.

Football is an important part of both school and community identity. Hundreds of vehicles can be seen circling the bowl to cheer on their hometown team and early morning and after-school practices remind everyone of the dedication of players and coaches.

Benefits will be seen beyond the game of football itself. As it offers a recreation option for players and fans and any time events or games are hosted in the community there is economic spinoff resulting from food and fuel purchases. As well, as the added benefit of visitors telling others about what a great venue Kerrobert’ s football field is.
