KERROBERT — Aug. 27 was a big day on the Kerrobert football field. Seven teams and 120 football players enjoyed a pre-season warm up before SHSAA football season begins. Macklin, Hanna, Rosetown, Kindersley, Kerrobert, Unity and Wakaw played in some scrimmage action throughout the day.
The goal for the senior high jamboree was to get live reps in preparation for high school football season. Scores were not kept, and no trophies were awarded. Games were two, 30-minute halves with coaches on the field, whistles ready in place of officials and to help give instruction.
The weather wasn’t always co-operative as a couple of thundershowers rolled through during the day, but everyone persevered, and some of the teams got to experience the new permanent lights erected at Kerrobert’s field.
Kerrobert Football Association did due diligence in researching lights and rallying for sponsors and donors to support their initiative, enabling both the junior and senior football programs to extend their opportunities for games. While the committee is grateful for all the contributions to date, they are sill seeking donors to help complete payment on the project.
The organization is currently orchestrating a full event on Sept. 16 stating, “Lots of exciting stuff is going to be happening that day.” Both junior and senior football teams will be hosting games and there will be an event atmosphere to help celebrate this addition to the Kerrobert bowl. Organizers are lining up local vendors, as well as flag, junior and senior teams will be playing against Macklin for all three games as their community also hosts football programs in the same divisions.
The goal for the lights project is $100,000 and the committee has around one fifth of that goal to complete their fundraising quest. The Kerrobert Football Association are continuing to fundraise, as well as accept donations. Supporting the Sept. 16 event is also earmarked to help out the lights project.
Migrating out of ball and golf season and pre-hockey activity, Kerrobert football field will be where the sports action is at this fall in the community.
