UNITY — The 2022 fall cross-country run meets kicked off for local schools at the Unity Golf Course Sept. 15. Some 20 schools sent almost 300 runners to take part in the male and female races for six separate age groups.
There were 82 runners in the novice boys’ event and Van and Liam from St. Peter’s School were first and second respectively, with Ty from Luseland coming in fifth.
St. Peter’s also had a second-place runner in novice girls – Layne. Also in the top 10 out of 80 racers were two Norman Carter students, Brilee in fifth and Rylee in ninth place. Harper from Kerrobert Composite School placed seventh.
In peewee boys, Brady of Unity Composite High School had the fastest time for first place, with Kerrobert’s Brady less than a minute behind claiming sixth. Cutter from Unity Public School was seventh and Gage from Luseland ninth.
The highest placing for peewee girls from the Press-Herald reading area was sixth for Lily from Luseland. Berkley from Kerrobert was seventh and Ella from UPS was 10th.
A UCHS runner, Kellan, took first spot in bantam boys, with Bronc from Kerrobert close behind for second place. The only local runner in the bantam girls’ event was Natalie from Luseland who finished fifth.
In intermediate boys, Gabriel from Luseland was third. There were no local intermediate girls running.
Luseland’s Olivia finished first among the junior girls, with no local boys of that age group competing.
In senior girls, Emma from McLurg High School in Wilkie was second. On the boys’ side, Luke from McLurg was third.
Unity Composite High School has taken over the hosting of this event (from St. Peter’s School) and Principal Aaron Melnyk’s guess was that “there were nearly 400 people up at the course including parents, volunteers, coaches and athletes.”
Summing up the day, Melnyk said, “I’m very thankful that the golf course supports us in running the race up there and hope everyone enjoyed the day. It was a beautiful day for running and I am lucky to have so much help in our community.”
