UNITY – Students from Unity Composite High School, Kerrobert Composite School and McLurg High School were selected to play in the Basketball Sask Senior Classic All-Star games April 6 and 7 in Saskatoon.
Five girls from Wilkie; Brooke Bannerman — Emily Hango, Kieran Brebner, Chloe Brebner and Kiri Myszczyszyn — attended the classic in the 1-3A division. Broncs coach, Mark Myszczyszyn, said he was impressed to hear that McLurg would be well represented at the provincial event.
“These girls have been playing stronger teams and winning over the past few seasons. They have worked hard over the past six years, as a team and as individuals,” said Myszczyszyn.
From Kerrobert, Kate Snider also played in the 1-3A division. Kyran Amola, who was the lone local male, was also selected to play.
Unity students chosen included Aithel Sumaya and Mollie Orobko. Unity Warriors coach, Aaron Melnyk, said it is a great honour knowing players from the program will be representing on the provincial stage.
“Orobko and Sumaya have had excellent high school basketball careers with the Warriors. Their dedication and love of the sport has taken them to great heights, and they deserve the recognition,” Melnyk said.
Orobko said she was excited to be chosen to play.
“One thing I kept in mind was that this is our last game playing high school basketball and just play hard and have fun with other graduating players. It was a fun experience and taking it all in was exciting,” she added.
Sumaya said she was happy to be playing with many other seniors from around the province.
“With limited spots for this opportunity, it felt great to be a part of it.
“This game will encourage many players to show their skills off. Even though I haven’t played with some of them during my season, I am delighted to see every single one of them.”
Along with the students, Melnyk was selected as one of the coaches for the event.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to work together as coach and players. Having the representation on the provincial level encourages future players to continue to make their mark across the province,” he said.
