UNITY — The senior girls’ basketball team at Unity Composite High School has showcased growth and dedication throughout this season, demonstrating continuous improvement and desire for excellence. Building upon three consecutive Hoopla appearances, expectations for success remain high.
This year's roster includes a cohort of seasoned athletes, with six graduating players leading the charge. Among them are Molly Orobko, Sydney Greenwald, Aithel Sumaya, Grace Lindsay, Jorja Gumpinger and Danielle Bowker, all of whom bring great experience to the team.
Throughout the season, the team has travelled all over the province, participating in tournaments at Prince Albert, Martensville, Outlook, Assiniboia and Wynyard. As we approach the conclusion of the regular season, excitement builds for the home Pink Tournament scheduled for March 1-2. Last year's event saw the team raise over $1,400 for breast cancer research and they hope to make a similar contribution again this year.
The Warriors' first Pink Game is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. March 1 against Maidstone. It promises to be an exciting evening of basketball while contributing to an important cause. Adult admission for this event is $5, with student tickets priced at $2, with all proceeds directly supporting breast cancer initiatives. Additionally, a silver collection will be held at the door throughout the weekend.
Beyond the game itself, spectators can participate in a range of fundraising activities including a bake sale, the sale of pink merchandise and a raffle with wonderful prizes. Attendees can also look forward to a special halftime recognition of the Grade 12 players and their families, alongside an exhibition game featuring the Grade 5/6 Unity basketball stars, offering a glimpse into the program's future.
While the Pink Tournament promises excitement and camaraderie, it also serves as a quality competition for 2 and 3A teams preparing for playoffs. Following this event, the girls will move into their postseason journey, heading to Maidstone for conference playoffs on March 7-8. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they strive for postseason success again this year.
