Commentary: Can you spare some change?

Embrace the changes in your life, they may be just what you have been looking for, even if you don't realize it

Even though changes can be good or bad, we all have to make an effort to accept them.

UNITY  — There seems to be one thing that almost everyone is afraid of — change. Changes in the weather, changes to your diet, even changes to your vacation plans. Yet, change seems to always be there, whether it is in a positive or negative way.

I have noticed over the past few years, many folks are petrified of change. Take the pandemic for example. Every single person had to make a choice when it came to that drastic change. Some chose to make the change to protect the health of themselves or a loved one. Some chose to not change due to their beliefs. No one was right or wrong, they were just dealing with the changes we all were experiencing.

As humans, we fixate on these changes and usually, it is the negative changes we experience that fester the most. We moan and groan when we have to accommodate the negative changes such as changing an appointment to a less convenient time. Yet we do not think past ourselves. What if the person we had the appointment with had their own negative change in life? We don’t think of what caused the change, just that it happened and it messed things up.

There are some instances where the positive changes we see can also make us selfish. Sometimes we speak about all the good changes which may include an engagement, a promotion or possibly receiving a large sum of money. Even though these are seen as positive, speaking of them repeatedly can come across as bragging. In fact, when you talk about it, some who are listening could be affected. Your promotion could make your co-workers feel less valued as they have been in the same position for three years longer than you.

We should not fear change. It is one of those things that is inevitable. We cannot fight it or run away from it. We need to learn to embrace it and be humble. Sharing the news, regardless if it isn’t good or bad, just be mindful of who we are sharing it with and how it could affect them. Let us all think of the quote by Heraclitus “There is nothing permanent except change.” Yet the words we speak can permanently hurt those who mean the most to us.
