20 years ago: Unity won 2003 National Communities in Bloom competition

50 years ago

Cut Knife High School Grade 9 student Inez Weenie received a $50 cheque from Mrs. C. Maze of the Swarthmore District Women’s Institute. The award was presented annually to an Indigenous student who passed Grade 8 with a high scholastic average. The institute members wanted to encourage winners to continue in school to at least Grade 12 graduation.

Brandles’ Orchestra was to play at the Tramping Hall harvest ball.

Bernie Lorenz scored a touchdown and Stan Keller kicked a single point in the McLurg Broncs’ 13-7 loss to Rosetown in a football game.

The Unity Cardinals’ cash bingo had a large turnout, with David Ward of Wilkie taking home the blackout prize of $1,000. Mrs. Florence McGonigle of Unity won the $500 door prize.

Miss Sandra Stephens of Macklin, studying biochemistry, was awarded the Dr. Eid Memorial Scholarship of $350. Applications were received from Senlac, Macklin, Luseland, Salvador and Denzil. Stephens had the highest academic standing.

Dale and Yvette Fittes of Unity managed the unique achievement of each hitting a hole-in-one during the same game on the Saskatoon Willows Golf Course.

At the provincial sand golf tournament in Punnichy, the McLurg High School team won silver. Individually Mark Lorenz also won a silver medal, while Kyle Wagner was fifth, Tera Glessing ninth and Michael Nelson 10th.

Luseland Garden Club handed out Green Thumb awards to Cliff and Karen Mitzel and Clayton and Marilyn Kennedy.
