"At times it wasn't pretty, but it was the most complete game we've played in the stats department," said Battlefords Stars' head coach Martin Smith after a 5-2 win against the Saskatoon Blazers Wednesday night.

Teams around the Northwest have played for this opportunity all season. Some are heading to regionals, others are focused on provincials this weekendand it's a sure bet there will be some good volleyball played across the province.

By rights, the North Battleford Comprehensive High School senior girls' volleyball team would've been moving on to provincials regardless of the results on the weekend, but they took third place and earned their way in.

In a competitive championship event, two members of the Battlefords Karate-Do Club medaled earlier in the month. Nov. 6, nine members of the local club took part in the North East Genbukai Karate-Do Championships in St. Paul, Alta.

The Battlefords Midget Stars have dropped five of their last six games, with the most recent losses coming at the hands of the Notre Dame Argos. Saturday, the Stars surrendered six first period goals and couldn't get on track suffering a 14-4 loss.

The Battlefords AAA Sharks are still locked in a winless funk, as they lost in Prince Albert and twice at home to Saskatoon in a four-day span.

They won Provincials last year and took the first step to repeating that performance last week. The Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) senior girls' volleyball team hosted the North Regional Conference round-robin tournament on November 4.

It has been a year of learning the game, growing as a team and improving for the John Paul II senior boys' Crusaders volleyball team according to their coach Kristina Binette.

It's been a long, hard season, but one local soccer team managed to finish it on a high note last week.

The last time the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) Mohawks nine-man football team descended into the valley at Lumsden was to play the 2007 Provincial semi-final. On that day, the Mohawks eked out a last minute win.
