On the weekend of November 19, the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) senior girls Volleyball team headed to Rosetown for provincials.
It was a tough tournament, but in the end, the girls came away with the silver medal.
In the first game of the tournament against Martensville, Humboldt's size at the net overpowered their opponents. Both power hitters for Humboldt were extremely strong at the net.
The Mohawks playedMelville in their second game, which proved to be more of a challenge.
Although Humboldt came out strong to win the game, it was an excellent effort put in by both teams.
"Both Humboldt and Melville had exceptional setters," said HCI coach Keith Thompson.
The Mohawk setter had a very consistent game. Melville, however, came back to win the second set and was leading the third set 7-1 when the scrappy Humboldt Mohawks came back to win.
The third game saw the Mohawks face off against Lanigan. It was another close game, with Humboldt winning two of the three sets.
It was a greater victory when the team battled in their fourth game and won in two sets.
"This game was a back and forth battle dominated by Humboldt's ferocious attack game and countered by Luther's relentless blocking," said Thompson. "Mira Van Burck and Catherine Schulte stood tall at the net for the Lions but, in the end, Paige Crozon of the Humboldt Mohawks took control with two thunderous kills to end the game."
The girls went on to play Wynyard in the fifth game.
"Wynyard stormed out of the gate to an early 16-8 lead (in the first set)," said Thompson.
Although Humboldt won both sets, the Wynyard team showed great teamwork and heart throughout the game, noted Thompson.
Humboldt also dominated Melville in the sixth game. The Melville Cobras put up a good fight, but the Mohawks won both sets.
"(In the second set), the Cobras' Cassidy Harrick had two thunderous hits that gave them some life, but it was not enough to hold off the attack of the Mohawks," said Thompson.
In the last game, Humboldt battled the Oxbow Black Knights.
"Both teams played hard all weekend and the Humboldt Mohawks showed their strength in offence in the final match," said Thompson. "However, the Black Knights' defence was up to the task and used their own potent offensive attack to take control and bring home the gold medal to Oxbow."
The Mohawk girls played well and came away with the silver medal, being defeated only once by the Black Knights during the tournament.
