Former Sharks make a deep run in USports women’s hockey

Jetta Derenoski (2011-2012 affiliate Grade 8; 2012-2015 Grade 9-11) and Chloe Marshall won national silver with the Nipissing Lakers

THE BATTLEFORDS ‑ Two former members of the Battlefords AAA Sharks recently made a deep run in women’s university hockey playoffs.

Sharks alumni Jetta Derenoski (2011-2012 affiliate Grade 8; 2012-2015 Grade 9-11) and Chloe Marshall (2014-2016 Grade 11 and 12) helped the Nipissing Lakers of North Bay, Ont. capture silver in the Usport Women’s Hockey National Championship in Charlottetown, P.E.I. held March 24-27.

It was a Cinderella run for the Lakers, who had to get past the top ranked team in the nation, the University of Toronto, to win the East division of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA).

Derenoski played a key role in the one-game playoff against Toronto. Her goal tied the game at 18:51 of period one, and then got the game winner in the second period to win the division title and qualify the team for nationals.

Derenoski had started the year in the Battlefords working and coaching the midget AA girls, gut she and her coach Darren Turcotte, a former NHLer, agreed upon her returning to North Bay to finish her last year of eligibility in Usport.

Marshall was exceptional during nationals. Against UBC in their first game she helped Nipissing pull off another upset with a 41-save performance.

They beat the University of Moncton in another upset in the semifinal game to play for gold against Concordia University, but too many penalties in that final game proved to be the difference.

Both Derenoski and Marshall were excited to be part of the great run for Nipissing this year, and in doing so they well-represented all the alumni of the Battlefords Sharks.
