Saskatoon fire hosts open-house events

“Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” is this year's Fire Prevention Week theme.

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department is opening its two firehouses to the public next month to celebrate Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 6 to 12.

The SFD is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to raise awareness of fire prevention and be alert in emergencies.

This year’s theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” highlighting the importance of smoke detectors in alerting if there’s a fire in your house or any establishment.

Fire Station 1 in Idylwyld Drive 鶹ýAV will hold its open house on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and Station 8 will welcome residents on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Both events are from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Residents will be treated to fire engine tours, a presentation by the Fire Prevention Team, snacks, fire swag, and the opportunity to meet SFD members.

In other news, SFD crews responded to a structure fire in the 700 block of Avenue I North on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The incident was reported at 8:17 a.m.

The first arriving firefighters saw flames and smoke from the roof of the detached garage and advanced hose lines to the fully involved structure.

Another crew confirmed that the garage had no occupants then, and they were safely evacuated as their colleagues completely extinguished the fire.

More information will be provided after the fire investigator concludes with the report on the cause, origin, and damage estimate.
