A woman is lucky to be alive after she was rescued from a burning vehicle Monday morning following a rollover west of Batttleford.
According to RCMP, the incident happened in the early morning hours of June 27. Shortly after 2 a.m. police say an RCMP officer on patrol observed a truck lose control and enter the ditch between the lanes of Highway 16, around eight kilometres west of the Battlefords. The truck then rolled several times in the ditch and a fire started in the engine compartment.
Paramedics from WPD Ambulance were called to the scene and they report that upon arrival paramedics found the truck fully engulfed in flames. Also called in were members of the Battleford Fire Department and additional RCMP officers.
According to police, the drivers' side door would not open and the fire was spreading quickly to the rest of the vehicle. According to police and WPD Ambulance, a passerby helped in efforts to pull a woman to safety before emergency crews arrived. Police say the woman was unconscious and was removed from the passenger side of the vehicle by one of the officers, with the passerby assisting in removing the female to safety shortly before the truck became engulfed in flames.
The woman, age 31, was transported in serious condition to Battlefords Union Hospital. WPD Ambulance say she was later transported to Royal University Hospital for further care.
The matter remains under investigation.
