In case the temperatures ever get up to seasonal norms, the City of North Battleford is offering some tips for dealing with the meltdown.
The City is focused on ensuring the runoff drains properly, according to a press release
To prevent flooding, the Public Works Department has been clearing ice and snow away from catch basin covers, sometimes using steam to get the water moving. Residents can also help promote drainage by chipping ice away from catch basins.
To guard against water in basements, residents are encouraged to:
Remove snow and ice from around your home (sidewalks, driveways) so it drains away from the foundation.
Ensure downspouts are extended at least one metre away from the foundation.
Check to make sure sump pumps are working. Those who don't have one, should consider installing one.
Check basements regularly for signs of water.
The spring melt is not only messy, it creates potholes. When the melting stops, the City will begin working on repairing potholes and sweeping streets. Drivers are asked to watch for, and obey, occasional traffic restrictions as the City works on the spring cleanup.
When it comes to drainage, potholes or any other problems associated with the melt, residents can ensure the City is aware by calling the Public Works Department at 445-1730.
