Unity Community Centre hosted an MS Liberation Therapy fundraiser featuring Double Vision comedy/magic act March 12.
This event, which drew 150 supporters, came about when local MS sufferer, Megan Gerein, who was diagnosed at just age 18 (she is now 25) with MS. She is travelling to Costa Rica in early April for the CCSVI liberation therapy treatment. The cost of the surgery, physiotherapy sessions post, 24-hour nurse on duty at the hotel, hotel room, shuttle and air fare would be around $17,000.
This is enormous for any individual let alone someone this young. After hearing of Megan's plight, the local Knights of Columbus wanted to take it a step further and suggested a fundraising evening. They approached Megan and her mom and they were in agreement as long as the fundraiser wasn't only about Megan. So, an agreement was struck and the fundraising plans began in hopes of raising money not only for Megan, but other MS sufferers wishing to have this procedure done.
Tim Guth, K of C member, volunteered to head the committee and within a short period of time he garnered the support he needed to form a Unity MS Liberation Fundraiser Committee from several different service and community groups and individuals. This entire event was put together in just under three and a half weeks.
Auction items poured in, including those from neighbouring communities. Double Vision was a big hit. Following the entertainment, Alana Baier, from Macklin, gave a talk on her experience with liberation treatment she had done in Costa Rica.
Megan gave an emotional speech expressing her appreciation to everyone who supported the fundraiser.
As lunch was served, folks continued the fun of bidding on their favourite auction items.. There was a great selection ranging from gift baskets, various quilts and even a tonne of fertilizer. One quilt, made by one of Megan's former classmates was purchased by her former classmates as a gift to her.
A 50/50 draw, guaranteed at $1,000, was won by Hal Martfeld of Unity.
The generosity of the community and surrounding area was overwhelming. The people of Unity once again proved how they band together to work for a common cause and need.
