The third event of the Battlefords Jazz Society 2010-11season promises to be a fantastic show, and will include some well-known local talent.

Hot on the heels of the Worst Pop Band Ever comes another act the Battlefords may not have seen the likes of before...jazz violinistKarl Roth.

Roth has been performing for audiences for 30 years and for this show he will be performing with local musicians Don Tatchell on drums and Ross Nykiforuk on keyboards.

Roth's distinctive jazz violin playing and singing voice have brought him a lot of fans across Canada. His repertoire is jazz standards from the "American Songbook" and oddball treasures.

Roth's playing style carries on in the tradition of jazz violin greats like Joe Venuti, Stéphane Grappelli and Stuff Smith and his singing is influenced by Louis Armstrong's approach of "singing from the heart." Roth has performed with Amos Garrett and Oscar Lopez as a member of the Cold Club of Canada.

Roth's regular band consists of two outstanding guitar players. Dave Hamilton has been playing with Roth for 15 years and Jeff Drummond provides the other guitar sound.

Roth has to date released three CDs, "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat," 1997, a Christmas CD in 1998 and a third album "Almost Behaving" in 2001.

Local music enthusiasts will enjoy seeing sought after drummer Don Tatchell on stage with Roth. Tatchell, one of the multi-talented members of the musical Tatchell family, began playing drums in the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band. In 1969, he became a member of the RCMP Band stationed in Ottawa as their drummer and performed all across Canada until 1973. At that time he returned to North Battleford and started working in his family's business. He still continues his love of music and is active in the music scene in North Battleford and all over Saskatchewan as a sought-after jazz drummer.

Ross Nykiforuk will be playing keyboards, another son of North Battleford, Nykiforuk is a multi-talented film and TV composer, producer, engineer, arranger and recording studio co-owner. Like Tatchell, Nykiforuk also hails from a musical family and began taking piano lessons at the age of six, eventually earning a Bachelor of Music degree.

Playing in a wide spectrum of musical settings, he's notched a bit of rock history as the keyboardist for The Northern Pikes.

Saturday, April 9, the Chapel Gallery is the place to be. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for non-members and are available from NuFloors, Bee-J's and Prosound Music or by phoning 446-3210. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.
