The City of North Battleford recognizes the importance of raising awareness about the global issue of climate change, according to a City press release.
"We hope residents will join us this Saturday night (March 26) as we pledge to turn off our lights from 8:30 until 9:30 p.m. and participate in Earth Hour 2011 - a global lights-out initiative led by the Word Wildlife Fund (WWF) in which municipalities around the world are being asked to turn off non-essential lights and equipment," the release states.
The City of North Battleford will:
Turn off the decorative water tower lights;
Turn off all non-essential lighting in City facilities (emergency and security lighting will remain on).
The release also states: "Earth Hour is designed to show how we can all be a part of the climate solution. Turning off your lights for just one hour can add up to make a real difference. Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Today, it is the largest global environmental movement in history."
Last year in Canada, more than 10 million people in more than 300 cities and towns turned off their lights.
