Edam West members showcase achievements

The Edam West 4-H Club held their annual achievement day June 3 in the Edam Community Centre. Club president Brandi Kobes led the members into the ring for introductions and to start the proceedings with the 4-H pledge.

The Edam West 4-H Club held their annual achievement day June 3 in the Edam Community Centre.

Club president Brandi Kobes led the members into the ring for introductions and to start the proceedings with the 4-H pledge.

Leading the 17 members this year were Dwayne Kobes, Lisa Blaquiere and Karen McCaffrey. There were only three senior (16-21) members this year, Debbie McFarlane, Matthew Nedelec and Daniel de Montarnal, who are all graduating as well. In the intermediate (13-15) age group were Jared Blaquiere, Joel Blaquiere, Brandi Kobes, Brent Kobes, Marc LaClare, Owen LaClare, Emily Levasseur, Wyatt Malenfant, Denzil McCaffrey and Zachery Nedelec. Rebecca Kobes, Brittany Nedelec, Dawson Malenfant and Macey Levasseur were the juniors (9-12).

Judge for the show was Randy Aumack of Spiritwood with Corey McFarlane acting as ring man and Amber Blaquiere as the MC for the evening. The day started at 3 pm for the members with the arrival and stalling of their calves, 4:30 brought the judging demonstration and score cards which was followed by a BBQ supper at 5:30.

The first class into the ring was senior showmanship with Debbie McFarlane placing first, Matthew Nedelec followed by Daniel de Montarnal. The intermediates were next with placings as follows; Owen LaClare, Wyatt Malenfant, Brandi Kobes, Marc LaClare, Jared Blaquiere and Joel Blaquiere. Then the junior class entered the ring with Brittany Nedelec placing first followed by Macey Levasseur, Rebecca Kobes and Dawson Malenfant.

The market steer class, called into the ring next, was divided into two classes according to weight. Returning to the ring from the first class were Dawson Malenfant, Matthew Nedelec, Brent Kobes, Wyatt Malenfant and from the second class, Marc LaClare, Denzil McCaffrey, Rebecca Kobes and Jared Blaquiere. The steer that captured the grand championship was owned by Rebecca Kobes with the reserve going to Denzil's steer, followed by Marc LaClare, Wyatt Malenfant, Brent Kobes, Jared Blaquiere, Dawson Malenfant and Matthew Nedelec.

The yearling heifer class entered the ring and Brandi Kobes' heifer took the grand championship with Joel Blaquiere's taking reserve followed by Jared Blaquiere, Rebecca Kobes, Debbie McFarlane and Denzil McCaffrey. The cow/calf class grand champion was owned by Brandi Kobes.

The senior showmanship class was won by Debbie McFarlane followed by Matthew Nedelec and Daniel de Montarnal. The best intermediate showman for the day were Brandi Kobes , Emily Levasseur, Marc LaClare, Owen LaClare and Joel Blaquiere. In the junior class Rebecca Kobes, Macey Levasseur, Dawson Malenfant and Brittany Nedelec led the way.

Breed specials were shown at the end of the day with Joel Blaquiere and Jared Blaquiere placing first and second in the Angus heifer special. Other winners were: Angus steer - Rebecca Kobes, Simmental heifer - Brandi Kobes, Simmental steer - Marc LaClare and other breed steer - Denzil McCaffrey with his Black Gelbvieh/Angus cross steer.

Prior to the show the members were to hand in their record books to be judged with the results as follows: senior - Debbie McFarlane, Matthew Nedelec, Daniel de Montarnal; intermediate - Emily Levasseur, Jared Blaquiere, Joel Blaquiere; junior - Macey Levasseur, Brittany Nedelec and Rebecca Kobes.

The questionnaire was also written prior to the show with winners: senior -Debbie McFarlane and Daniel de Montarnal; intermediate - tied for first Joel Blaquiere and Denzil McCaffrey and tied for second Jared Blaquiere and Brandi Kobes; junior - Brittany Nedelec and Dawson Malenfant.

The judging cards were marked by the judge of the day, Randy Aumack, and the winners are as follows: junior - Dawson Malenfant, Brittany Nedelec, Macey Levasseur; intermediate - Joel Blaquiere, Jared Blaquiere, Denzil McCaffrey; senior - Debbie McFarlane, Daniel de Montarnal, Matthew Nedelec.

Winning the award for the steer that had the best rate of gain was Denzil McCaffrey, whose steer gained 3.24 lb/day. Following the day's events, the member who achieved the highest number of points and winning the grand aggregate award donated by John and Michelle Roach was Brandi Kobes with Debbie McFarlane in a close second place.

The members then had Saturday to clean up and get their calves to Lloydminster for the 4-H show and sale. Congratulations to the winners and on a job well done.
