Work continues on with the construction of the four components of the Credit Union CUPlex.
Scott Builders was mobilized April 18 to start work on the curling and field house components of the CUPlex project. Meanwhile, work is far along for both the theatre component and the aquatics centre.
According to a April 19 city memo from parks and recreation director Keith Anderson, theatre contractors APM continue to make progress with the project.
The structural steel divisions (1,2,3 and 4) are all substantially complete, the parapet framing is 95 percent complete, the steel stud exterior wall framing is 45 percent complete and the exterior sheathing had started on the north and east walls on the second level. It was expected that exterior framing and sheathing would be completed by the end of the month for the north and west side of high tower and for the second level along grid line 2.
Concrete work resumed in the theatre seating area. Meanwhile, ground thaw was ongoing on the east end and backfilling and slab preparation had begun along the west wall and areas where ground thaw was complete.
The ground thaw is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
For the aquatic centre, heating and hoarding removals are complete, installation of masonry to the north and northwest is complete, parapet and curb construction are complete to the north and northwest, and the structural steel has been erected over the pool areas. Basement wall installation has also been completed to level and additional work is completed or ongoing.
For the curling and field house components, earth works were to commence and Scott Builders was to build the perimeter parking and driving lane from the theatre to aquatics construction. Anderson confirmed at council Monday that a lot of earth had been moved already since last week.
Also, according to Anderson's memo there will be a substantial pile of fill to be stored on City Ag land to the north, that will require a permanent home prior to freeze-up later this year.
Overall, councillors welcomed the report and the continued progress at the CUPlex site.
"Nice top see the steel framing going up," said councilor Trent Houk, while mayor Ian Hamilton called the progress "very exciting.".
