A meeting of city council June 27 was the last one before the summer schedule takes effect.
Council meetings are reduced to one per month during July and August to accommodate summer vacations. Council will meet again July 25 and again on Aug. 22.
A resolution was also passed formally canceling all monthly municipal services meetings for the months of July and August. The items usually covered during those meetings - the crime report from the RCMP, the fire report, business licenses, and so on - will instead be covered at their regular meetings.
The main decision reached was passage of both the resolution and the rezoning bylaw paving the way for completion of Stage II the Fairview Heights subdivision.
Council unanimously passed a resolution that the city undertake construction of all 39 lots and that additional funds required to complete the development be allocated from the land reserve.
About $300,000 from reserves is being allocated for the additional 11 lots to be developed to complete the project. The city would ultimately receive that amount back when the lots are sold. The lots that complete the development will be located just south of Buhler Avenue, to the east of Amos Drive and west of Clements Drive
In connection to that development, the final two readings of a zoning bylaw that rezones from A1 Agricultural to R2 Residential and to R1 Residential a number of proposed lots in Fairview Heights passed.
In other council business, the City considered the issue of permitting angle parking on the 1600 block of 95th Street.
The issue came up as a result of a letter from local residents in that area who want to see the bylaw changed to permit angle parking. They say local residents were able to angle park without incident until recently, when residents were given warnings on their vehicles stating angle parking will no longer be permitted and the bylaw will now be enforced, with tickets issued.
Administration made a recommendation in a June 24 memo that angle parking be allowed on the west side of the street on 95th Street, while no parking be allowed on the east side of the street. They also are recommending proper signage be installed to indicate the amended parking regulations.
A resolution put forward to that effect was discussed at council Monday, but ultimately no decision was made with the resolution tabled to a later meeting.
Councillor Don Buglas said he wants to hear from the neighbouring Ecole Monseigneur Blais Morand on the issue, and others agreed with the idea that there be further consultation before making a final decision.
Council also passed both a snow plowing and ice control police and its roadway inspection policy at council. According to the mayor, the purpose of the policy is to simply establish policies that are already in practice right now.
