June 20, 2009 saw the first annual Saskatoon Motorcycle Ride for Dad with motorcycle enthusiasts from Saskatoon and surrounding areas gathering in Saskatoon for support of the fight against prostate cancer.
Since then, various communities throughout the area have been holding fundraising events to raise money for the cause.
The community of Blaine Lake hosted a Motorcycle Ride for Dad (MRFD) pancake breakfast on May 1, where over 240 guests gathered to enjoy the breakfast and fellowship while supporting the worthy cause. A total of over $1,100 was realized for the MRFD event that will take place June 18.
The Motorcycle Ride for Dad is Canada's largest annual motorcycle event dedicated to prostate cancer and occurs every year during Father's Day weekend.
"This is the third year for the ride in the Blaine Lake area," commented Mark Diehl explaining that over the last two years $172,000 has been raised with anticipation of reaching and breaking the $250,000 goal.
In its 10-year span, the organization has raised over $5 million and is funding research projects in 18 major cities across Canada.
"I want to acknowledge you and the local communities for supporting and hosting this event," says Diehl.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men. It is estimated there are over one million cases of prostate cancer in Canada with only 20 per cent having been diagnosed. Early diagnosis is instrumental in having this form of cancer successfully treated. With early diagnosis it is estimated 90 per cent can be successfully treated.
