Careless use of a firearm

A 22-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being injured by a firearm while camping near Whitkow over the weekend. According to RCMP, at approximately 3 a.m.

A 22-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being injured by a firearm while camping near Whitkow over the weekend.

According to RCMP, at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday a camper thought an animal was approaching the campsite and allegedly discharged his firearm to try to scare it off.

One of the campers in his party, a tourist visiting from Denmark, was struck by the discharge and sustained a non-life threatening injury.

The victim was treated at the scene by members of the camping party and was then taken to the hospital in North Battleford. She was treated and released after receiving treatment for wounds to her upper body.

No charges have been laid against a 26-year-old man from North Battleford who was involved in the incident.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Members from the North Battleford Forensic Identification Section and the Provincial GIS unit are assisting the investigation.
