The final gliding day for Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 43 for the 2010-11 season was June 12.
That day, another donation was received by the squadron from a long-time supporter of the air cadet program in the Battlefords, Harry Zamonsky, who had a son go through the program.
Zamonsky has been with Sun Life Financial for over 42 years, and the company has also made donations to RCACS. In recognition for his support, Zamonsky received an Air Cadet League Medallion Coin from Melissa Bohse, chairperson of the civilian committee.
Zamonsky met the cadets at the airport and watched a few glides. The weather tried its best to keep the cadets out of the air, and everyone had to take shelter for a short while, but each cadet still managed one glide each. Some cadets had their very first glide that day; others were excited to be able to fly one more time.
The North Battleford Gliding Center had just enough time to tie down the gliders and pose for a photograph with the cadets before a storm rolled in.
Some cadets will be attending summer camp this year, and they will all return for another season in September. The program will be switching its parade night to Monday nights instead of Tuesday nights.
The program is for youth aged 12 to 19, who learn many skills and disciplines, but it's not only for those who want to learn to fly. The door is open for many more to join, and there is no obligation to join the military after completing the program.
Currently, 43 RCACS has 28 cadets in the program.
