North Battleford voters will go to the polls Wednesday, Sept. 14 in a municipal byelection to replace departing city councillor Rhonda Seidel.

Seidel resigned her council seat May 18 in order to take new job with SaskTel in Swift Current. On Tuesday, North Battleford council passed a resolution setting the byelection date during its regular council meeting.

Two dates had been considered by the City as possible byelection dates. The other possibility was Wednesday, July 27, but administration recommended the September date as it would allow the election to take place after the summer holiday season when electors are back from vacations.

The nomination period will run from Friday July 22 to Tuesday, Aug. 9, with nomination day being Wednesday, Aug. 10.

The resolution approved unanimously by council members Tuesday also appoints the city clerk as returning officer, sets the Civic Centre's Lower Auditorium as the polling place, sets polling hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., sets the advance poll for Sept. 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at North Battleford Public Library, establishes a mobile poll for election day with a deadline of Sept. 7 set as the application for voting by that method. Remuneration rates for election workers were set at the same level as 2009.

In her letter of resignation to the city, Seidel bid farewell to the council position she held since the fall of 2009.

"I sincerely appreciate the opportunity I have had to work with city council and administration in North Battleford over the past year," Seidel stated.

"I wish you all the best during the remainder of your tenure on council and look forward to hearing all the exciting things that are and will continue to happen in the future. Thank you again for this great opportunity to serve the best community to live, work and play!"

Mayor Ian Hamilton said Seidel will "be missed by us all".
