Only three days until Christmas! Check out some of the fabulous light displays around town. Better yet pick up a senior and take them touring with you.
The CEO of Ventures West Charter bus lines is celebrating a big birthday and we remember his day of birth well. Wishing a happy birthday to one of our favorite bus drivers, Jordan.
We are looking forward to a New Year鈥檚 Eve wedding in North Battleford. Congratulations Brett Cave and Amanda Hansen on your nuptials and we excited to be part of your big day.
Congratulations to Ken Dresser, Kim Warnock and Heitt鈥檚 Plumbing who won the Legion draws.
School is out for the Christmas break after an early dismissal Wednesday. Staff and students have been busy this month, so they are looking forward to down time with their families. UPS finished off their year by performing random acts of kindness around town, while UCHS hosted the 12 compliments of Christmas campaign acknowledging something special about each student and staff member. St. Peter鈥檚 School students were kept busy sharing their musical talents during many Christmas performances.
UCHS drama group has been active this fall as they have had two performances in the works since September. Mr. Bick鈥檚 production of Roasting Thor was performed Dec. 13 and 15.
The musical Little Shop of Horrors is being presented by Mrs. Gilbert鈥檚 drama students Jan. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. The second performance features dessert hosted by Mrs. David and students with drama parents bringing the desserts. The production has many moments of lighthearted humour, some drama and a touch of the absurd. The music is incredible and the cast is thankful to be accompanied by Vicki Ehnisz.
St. Peter鈥檚 will offer Christmas Eve family mass at 7:30 p.m. and midnight mass, as well as Christmas Day mass at 11 a.m. and New Year鈥檚 Day mass at 11 a.m. Unity Lutheran church will hold Christmas Eve service at 5:30 p.m. Unity Baptist Church will hold a Christmas celebration service at 10:30 a.m. and New Year鈥檚 Day worship and prayer at 10:30 a.m. Unity United Church will hold Christmas Eve service at 7:30 p.m. and there will be no services Dec. 25 or Jan. 1, with regular services resuming Jan. 8.
Congratulations to Team Heidt who has earned a spot at the Saskatchewan Provincial Tankard in February. The curling rink has fun with their ugly, retro, crazy Christmas sweater contest during December. The curling rink will host a Boxing Day Spiel on Dec. 26. The league schedule will return to normal Dec. 27.
The grad class could help you clean up your recyclables following the holidays. Their annual bottle drive takes place Jan. 3 starting at 5 p.m.
Post Christmas melancholy is real. Even though there is some excitement left with company still lingering or coming for New Year鈥檚 Day, there are some folks who will feel alone and down now that the events, activities, excitement and company of Christmas season is done or almost done. Why not visit a senior you know, or a lonely single neighbour who may need a pick me up this time of year?
Hockey continues to Dec. 23, but there will be a lull as teams enjoy a short break over the holidays. Hockey action will be back after Christmas, as several teams are hosting tournaments in January as well as the older divisions will have only a few more league games before they start participating in both league and provincial playoffs. And how about that Midget AA team? They just keep rolling along in the win column. Why not go check out one of their games? Refer to the TVs in the lobby or the Town of Unity website for schedules for the rink. And say 鈥渉i鈥 to our Recreation Director Ryan Doetzel, who officially started in his role Dec. 12.
As I finish another year of columns I want to offer thanks to everyone who compliments me or talks to me about this column, including my far away friends Keith, Clare, Jim and Janice, as well as the many others who have made sure I know that people other than those from Unity are reading. I also must offer editor Becky Doig my appreciation for her patience, as well as giving me the opportunity to showcase our community in this column. And, I would be remiss not to mention my inspiration in this column.
My coffee row folks may many not be as numerous this time of year, as folks are visiting or hosting family and friends. Those who are in attendance are expressing their appreciation for the many gifts Christmas brings including love, laughter, community camaraderie and, of course, health. These fine folks are enjoying reviewing the many activities that are coming up or have happened. They are anxious to share their 鈥渞emember Christmas when鈥 stories. The smiles shine and laughter echoes throughout the venues that host these groups and is surely contagious to those who experience it. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next time, wishing all of our readers both from Unity and outlying communities a merry Christmas! Wishing you all much health and happiness in the new year!
