It seems spring has sprung, but we do expect some more cold weather. There is water everywhere making work for some folks as the village is pretty flat and it doesn’t run to the lake as we’d like it to. The fish shacks are being taken off the lake as the ice recedes from the edge and, if the weather turns cold they could be frozen in, making it difficult to adhere to the March 31 deadline.
Contract bridge winner here March 13 was Eric Callbeck. Second was Robert Iverson.
The snowbirds are coming home from the United States and other warm places.
The monthly hall luncheon of roast beef and trimmings was another success March 17 and the committee was pleased as punch with the turn out. Appreciation for the good meal, and for the community’s support, was expressed by words and the clapping of hands.
The last senior paper of March 2017 has the picture and write-up of six of my old neighbors who celebrated milestone birthdays last year. Three who turned 80 are David Millar, Warren Latus and Wallace Duhaime and the three who turned 85 are Florence Johnson, Leo Gaboury and Alma Latus. Congratulations to each of them. They are all former farmers in the Bapaume district west of Spiritwood.
Norwegian whist was hosted by Rita Peterson in the newest Killdeer Park Condo March 17 with three tables in play. The top score went to Carol Huys, second high was tied among three — Judy Walker, Yvonne MacPherson and Murray McCrimmon. Visiting over a nice lunch closed the afternoon.
By May of 2018 it will be compulsory that all new cars in Canada have back-up cameras.
There will be one more evening of playing trump whist in the Vawn community hall March 31, the grand finale for the year. March 17 they had four tables in play and top scores were by Ava-Rae LaClare for ladies and Ed McCaffery for men. The travelling prize went to Jack Stewart and Arlene Walker. It’s always a nice time with these friendly folks at Vawn.
A shuffleboard tournament took place in the Do Drop In March 18, with a good turnout. Lots of food was on hand for folks to enjoy at noon and snack on all day. Top score went to Cora Christiansen and Maureen Campbell. Second high were Eric Callbeck and Tom Morgan and tied for third were Bev McCrimmon and Arlene Walker along with Nestor Fransoo and Gennie Craig. Many played various card games while waiting their turn to play or just visited and watched others play.Â
March 18, Alan and Laura Tucker and family attended the Saskatchewan Snowboard Association Provincial finals at Table Mountain. They were there to watch their grandson Rio compete in the under 14 age group. After each competitor had five runs each, the marks were tallied and Rio came out in first place. It was a warm sunny day spent with a wonderful bunch of snowboarders and their families at a first class facility close to home. Alan and Laura's daughter Michelle was also able to attend as she is home from Sweden where she was attending school.
