The Radisson 71 Seniors' Club celebrated completing phase I of their renovation and restoration of their club room by inviting people from Borden, Maymont and Radisson to a tea on the afternoon of Nov. 21.

The club was organized in 1971 with the building that had been built in 1922 being restored and renovated. Now with new renovations, the ribbon was cut by the oldest original member - Stella Gabrysh - to officially reopen the restored interior.

Chris Tyreman was in charge of the renos. New windows and mouldings were installed, along with a new outer door and frame, new enlarged closets to hang coats, fancy moulding around the archway leading from the entrance, all repainted inside, and new ceramic flooring.

In February of 2015, phase II will begin with a new kitchen, appliances and refurbished bathrooms, then phase III in the summer will be finishing the exterior and landscaping to include wedding gardens.

This renovation is all being done with a grant from the federal government's New Horizons funding for seniors.

In addition to the seniors' activities, there will be a learning centre including the astronomy club, scrabble club, fitness events, shuffleboard, cards, games and other activities. The building is available for rent by the hour, all day or weekends.

President Louise Clark thanked New Horizons for the grant, the many volunteers who helped out, the individuals and others who donated materials or work, Chris Tryeman for all his expertise and the many who cleaned and supplied the food for the tea.

There were two 50/50 draws and winning $13 each were Audrey Baker and Lorraine Olinyk. Over 20 door prizes were handed out to visitors. A game was played to rearrange the letters to make new words. A lunch of open-faced buns, pickles, dainties, cherry cream cheese dessert and beverages was served.(photo)

Borden School held their scholastic book fair Nov. 19 with a pizza lunch to start, then a short program by K - Grade 6. The kindergarten and Grade 1 class sang about authors. Grades 2 - 4 recited a poem about books and did the Chicken Dance. The Grade 5 and 6 class wrote a poem about winter and recited it. Playing piano solos were Bill Hosegood and Tyler Barth, and Carson Derksen demonstrated his Ukrainian dancing.

Each student received a $1 coupon to go towards a purchase. The sales were very successful so the school should receive close to 800 free books, similar to their last sale.

The Borden Friendship Club held their first bingo for the winter Nov. 17 with only 13 out to play and five workers, so a very small profit but sales of beverages and goodies helped. Winning $15 for each game were Stella Hawryluk, Audrey Duda twice, Eileen Petrun three times, Justine Katerynch of Langham twice, Lorraine Olinyk and the blackout of $20 to Pat Trischuk. The next bingo will be a Christmas ham and turkey bingo Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the club room.

The Borden senior boys' volleyball team played 1A regionals in Loon Lake Nov. 22, winning their games against Loon Lake, Goodsoil and Dinsmore but losing out to Thunderchild in their last game. Because of their three wins and Thunderchild's four wins, both teams advance to provincials in Mossbank Nov. 28 and 29. Keep up the good playing, boys, and hope you're successful at provincials.

At provincials, the Borden boys will be playing in Mossbank, starting with a game Nov. 28 against Fox Valley at noon. They play Gladmar at 3 p.m., Annaheim at 6 p.m. and, on Nov. 29, play Avonlea at 11 a.m. Playoffs start at 12:30 p.m. You can follow the results at SHSAA 1A Seniors Boys Volleyball.

Radisson recreation board held their annual roast beef supper Nov. 22 in the hall, with a real good turnout even though the weather was really nasty with blowing snow and icy roads. A 50/50 draw was held and they also sold tickets on the Grey Cup game Nov. 30.

A baby shower was held in the Borden seniors' room Nov. 22 for Leo, infant son of Craig and Heather Ginther of Borden, born the end of September. Guests were introduced including Heather's mom Cathy Ginther and Craig's mom Ann Richards. Then everyone present introduced themselves and where they lived.

Games were played with winners receiving prizes. Everyone enjoyed lunch and a beverage; then the gifts were opened and handed around. Heather thanked everyone for coming and for all the wonderful gifts. (photo)

The movie Frozen was shown at the Borden Community Centre, the afternoon of Nov. 23, sponsored by the library and the Riverbend Fellowship Church. Fifty-two adults and children were present to enjoy the presentation. Over 15 door prizes were handed out to adults and children. The winners of prizes for the colouring contest were Kale Redhead and Kaitlyn Worona. Raffle prizes of stuffed pillows of Elsa and Olaf were won by Olivia Kolosky and Sadie Funk.

Coming up in the next few weeks are Radisson craft day Nov. 29, Borden Farmers' Market sale Dec. 6 in the hall, both from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Santa Claus Day at 2 p.m. in Radisson Dec. 13 with the Royal Purple tea, bake sale and raffles from 2 - 4 p.m. in Radisson Hall and a Christmas bingo at 7 p.m. in the evening with proceeds to the new hall fund.

Carol festivals are Dec. 7 in the hall at Borden and Dec. 14 at Radisson Lutheran Church, both at 7 p.m.
