The Chapel Gallery is hosting a Big Things panel discussion Saturday, August 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The seminar wraps up a week of workshops by sculptors from across the province. The $25 registration fee covers a light breakfast, refreshments and lunch. Breakfast will be available starting at 8:15 a.m.
Stuart Reid, the executive director of the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina, will be the moderator for the day's presentations and discussions. The schedule includes:
Ellen Moffat - Sound Fields: Space, Time and Bodies. Ellen will discuss how sound embodies presence and absence and will show examples of sound installations.
Terry Billings - Blind Light, Nightwalks and Snowballs: Strategies for Dematerializing Sculpture. This presentation examines the physical component of sculpture and how sculpture can be used to understand the world in the present. Terry is the mentor in the Creative Partnerships program currently in North Battleford.
Michael Farnan - Space, Place and the Art Object. Michael looks at the relationships individuals and objects have with spaces and how they are formed.
Sylvia Ziemann - Everything Small is Big Again: Why size matters. Sylvia looks at her own work and the transformation from big work to big ideas.
Tyler Brett - Setting the Stage: New use for old forms. Tyler will show how his work has been influenced by his childhood and the path that led him to Saskatchewan.
Lionel Peyachew - The Context of Creating Sculpture. Lionel presents the factors that affect his creative process and shows examples of his own work.
Sean W. Whalley - Materials in an Urban Environment: Sustainable practices and harvesting from detritus and repurposed materials. Sean uses examples from his own work and other contemporary sculptors to show how art can be a sustainable process.
