The evening of March 17, the Borden Lions hosted district governor of 5SKN Paul Danis and his wife Elsie from Wakaw at a banquet and program. Other special guests were past district governors Eldon Gibson and his wife Maybelle Boyenko from Downtown Saskatoon Lions and Ron Ewles and his wife Carol from Saskatoon Centennial Lions and mayor of Borden Jamie Brandrick and his wife Kandis. After the meal, Helen Sutherland proposed a toast to the queen and Don Dyck proposed one to Lions International, celebrating 100 years in 2017.
Perry Nicol, president of Borden Lions, spoke on projects the Lions are doing locally. A legacy project has been undertaken in conjunction with the museum to build a bathroom in the museum.
Nicol gave a brief history of Danis, who was born in Quebec, served in the army for 20 years then reserves for 16 years and was a peacekeeper overseas. He was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee medal. He joined the Saskatoon Downtown Lions in 1980, retired to Wakaw in 1993 and joined the Wakaw Lions in 2010. He has attended all Lions conventions, is a director for Saskatchewan CNIB and volunteers in many organizations.
Danis talked about overcoming difficulties in recruiting new members. He urged members to help physically and mentally challenged people and to be visible in their community.
Danis had a large banner for District 5SKN with the Lions logo imprinted on and everyone was to sign it to go on to convention. Danis awarded a certificate to Borden Lions for donating to youth camps, a badge to go on their banner, 10-year chevron to Sharon Assman and a 20-year chevron to John Buswell.
Danis then conducted the induction service for four new members, with Ewles reading the Lions International Purposes and Gibson reading The Voice of the Lions. Certificates and pins were presented to new members Audrey Baker, Lorraine Olinyk, Ed Neufeld and Bill Zamosny of Radisson. Certificates and 100-year Lions pins were presented to sponsors Anne Palmer (accepted by Bev Assman), Sandra Long (accepted by Perry Nicol), Mel Wasylyshin and Archie Wainwright.
A donation of $100 was given to Danis to spend on whatever charity he chooses.
After the ceremonies, Celtic Country with Bob, Archie, Ed, Sean and Perry, played and sang a number of Irish songs, with everyone joining in with the words printed on the overhead screen. Marlene Derbawka joined with Bob to sing a few songs.
