Unity Golf Club is very proud of junior member Justin Wood who competed in Junior Men's National Golf Championships in Surrey, B.C. last week. Unfortunately Justin did not make the playoff cut but he was happy for the experience gained in attending this big event.

After his return, Justin said it took him until his third year of Junior Men's to advance to Nationals, but he has two more years left to compete at this level. He felt his biggest disadvantage was his lack of experience. He found it somewhat intimidating and distracting to see taller, older players with their finesse drills on the greens. Some were wearing Team Canada golf gear and some appeared as though they have done this all of their lives.

Justin feels he learnt a lot from participating in an event such as this. He realizes there is room for improvement and over the winter he plans to become stronger and more flexible so he can coil a bit more (better turn on swing) as well as get more distance on his drives.

Justin still plans on at least two more Saskatchewan tournaments this summer which will help him prepare for senior high school golf competitions this fall, where he fell just short of advancing from in 2010. In senior high golf, the top three golfers and the best team in a district advance to provincials, which is another goal Justin has set for himself.

He wants to find his own style and continually improve on playing 'his' game. He is still very much enjoying all this golf season has to offer, he is happy with the achievements he has had this season and he is already setting goals for 2012. As a member of Golf Saskatchewan, he watches their website for what is upcoming so he can pace himself accordingly.

Although disappointed with his level of play at Nationals, Justin appears very grounded by already setting goals for high school golf season, this winter's development and a whole new season starting the spring of 2012. One teacher from his high school said that Justin succeeds not only because of his desire for success, his self-discipline and his sportsmanship, but because he generally loves the game he is playing.

Congratulations, Justin, and we look forward to reporting on, reading, and hearing of your successes.
