Games day winners declared

The Neilburg Seniors' Center was a hive of activity April 4 when the regular games day was held. Marjorie Nattress and Mary Graham were the A side winners on the shuffleboard table. Edna Jeffrey and Marlene Washenfelder came in second.

Maurice Therien has been the manager at the Neilburg branch of, what is now known as Synergy Credit Union, for a total of 34 years. Prior to that, he also spent four years with the credit union in Edmonton, for 38 total years of service. Therien recently officially retired and the branch marked the milestone, serving members coffee and cake and giving them a chance to give Maurice their best wishes. Former and current credit union employees who came to congratulate Therien included: back row - Russ Schemenauer, Don Nicholson, Bill Bourgeault, and Ross Houston; front row - Ross Graham and Maurice Therien. Now that he's retired, Therien is hoping to find some time to go fishing and to do some hunting. A new manager has not yet been appointed.

Edna Jeffrey and Marlene Washenfelder came in second. On the B side, Mary Svajlenko and Roberta Ridley teamed up to win. Bill Ridley and Marrian Graham were the runners-up. Sandy Weinkauf was the lucky raffle winner.

After the soup and sandwich luncheon, cribbage was played. Dorothy Harris and Laurel Weiss were the winners with Bill and Roberta Ridley holding the low hands.

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Donald George Paterson who passed away, at the age of 66, April 11, in Lloydminster. Don was born on Canada Day. His funeral service was held from the Marsden Community Hall April 14 with Pastor Mel Letkeman officiating. A tribute was given by Don's children and the eulogy was given by Paul Paterson. Left to celebrate his life, and mourn his passing, are his companion, Shirley Bleie; four children Trevor (Joyce) Paterson of Elnora, Alberta; Tracie (Patrick) Weinrauch of Saskatoon; Jason of Strathmore, and Carmen of Vancouver; the mother of his children, Pauline Paterson of Strathmore; six grandchildren, two brothers and one sister as well as numerous other relatives.

A joint Good Friday service was held at the Neilburg United Church with participation from the Manitou Evangelical Free Church. Both Rev. Lorna Brick and Pastor Mel Letkeman officiated. The theme of the service was Stones in Scripture, with each participantgiven a small rock to hold while meditating on the morning's message. Scripture readers, from both congregations, were: Denise Polkinghorne, Mavis Holmedal, Tom Poppleton, Dorothy Davis, Shelly Spence, Marj Nattress, and Mae Evanger. A ladies choir, from Manitou Evangelical Free Church, sang two special numbers - Jesus Built a Bridge and Thirty Pieces of Silver, with Hazel Wiens accompanying at the piano.

The Neilburg Co-op Agro held their annual Customer Appreciation Day April 7. There was a good attendance for the beef on a bun luncheon and many door prizes were awarded throughout the event.
