Man charged with extortion attempt on MLA Gary Grewal

Grewal says he was target of extortion; Harpinder Singh Bajwa charged and scheduled for provincial court Friday.

REGINA — Regina Northeast MLA Gary Grewal has confirmed he was the target of an extortion attempt that has seen an individual charged.

Regina Police say 36-year-old Harpinder Singh Bajwa has been charged with extortion, and was set to make his first appearance on this charge in Regina Provincial Court Friday afternoon.

According to police, their investigation was into a reported incident which took place in January 2023. Police described the victim as “an elected provincial government official.”

Police say the elected official told police that he was approached by the suspect who asked the victim to support him in a local political election process. According to police, when the victim refused, the suspect threatened to cause harm to his personal and professional life.

Later in the afternoon, MLA Grewal issued the following statement:

“Earlier today, the Regina Police Service announced that an individual has been charged with extortion. I was the target of that extortion attempt. 

“As this case is now before the courts, I will not be making any further public comment. I want to thank the Regina Police Service for their efforts in investigating this matter.”
