REGINA - A major fire during the early morning hours Tuesday morning has caused serious damage to a retail business in central Regina.

Regina Fire and Protective Service are reporting that they were on the scene this morning at a commercial fire at the 900 block of Dewdney Ave., which is next to Winnipeg St. in Regina. The location is home to the business Battery Depot.

in a social media post, Regina Fire asked people to avoid the area while crews continued to contain the fire. There were reports of traffic disruptions in that area during the early morning commute.

By around 9 a.m. Regina Fire was reporting that the fire was under control. They stated that crews remained on the scene for salvage and overhaul.

Later, CAA Saskatchewan issued a statement in which they confirmed that the fire took place at CAA’s Regina Car Care Centre at Regina Battery Depot.

Their news release confirmed that the fire was reported at the location around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. CAA states there was "extensive damage to the northeast corner of the building which is currently being demolished to ensure safety at the site. The remainder of the building received water and smoke damage. No one was in the building at the time. The business is closed until further notice."

CAA Saskatchewan is also thanking Regina Fire and Protective Services and Regina Police Service for their assistance.

The fire is currently under investigation.

The fire at Battery Depot was one of a number of incidents that Regina Fire had responded to over the previous 24 hours. The previous evening they had responded to a house fire on Athol St. at 8:26 p.m., which was located on the main floor. The fire was extinguished quickly and no injuries were reported; it will be under investigation.

Fire crews also responded last night to a structure fire at the 3600 block of Grassick Ave., which was contained to the bedroom area. Again no injuries are reported.
