REGINA – A Regina man is in hospital, listed as being in serious condition after a stabbing incident in the course of his arrest by police.
The incident occurred on June 27 at around 10:20 a.m. while members of the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit were executing a search warrant in a home as part of an investigation.
“As a result of the search, the members informed a 42-year-old male occupant of the house that he was under arrest,” explained a media release from the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team. “Prior to being taken into custody, the male retrieved a knife from a drawer and self-inflicted several stab wounds to his chest.”
Police were able to take the knife from the man and begin providing first aid before he was taken to hospital.
A SIRT team comprised of civilian executive director Gregory Gudelot and three investigators were sent to investigate the scene and conduct of police during the incident. The mandate of SIRT is to independently investigate incidents where a person has died or suffered a serious injury either from the actions of police or while in custody, and also allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.
Meanwhile, the ICE Unit will continue their investigation.
