REGINA – The man accused of running over a toddler with a truck on the George Gordon First Nation is facing new charges.
Mervin Robert Poorman, 33, is now facing charges of aggravated assault and confinement of a woman. The charges date back to June 22 - the same time when the tragic death of a one-year-old boy occurred and Poorman allegedly left the scene.
Punnichy RCMP responded to the call along with EMS, who declared the boy deceased on scene. A manhunt for Poorman ensued, concluding the following day with the Kawacatoose First Nation man being arrested at a home in Cold Lake, Alta.
Poorman’s lawyer, appearing by phone in Regina Provincial Court today, noted she did not receive information on the new charges. She was also seeking an adjournment on the previous charges in order to review disclosure with her client, who remains at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre.
After the new charges were read, the Crown noted their opposition to release. Ultimately, Judge A.M. Crugnale-Reid obliged with the request for an adjournment, setting Aug. 17 as Poorman’s next appearance.
