REGINA – A man accused of running over a toddler on the George Gordon First Nation, then fleeing to Alberta will wait until August for further court proceedings.
Mervin Robert Poorman, 33, appeared in Regina Provincial Court this morning via video link from the Prince Albert Correctional Centre.
Poorman’s lawyer also appeared by phone, noting the need for additional disclosure to review with her client. Judge Murray Hinds agreed with her request to adjourn the matter for three weeks.
Charges of failure to stop after an accident resulting in death, and operation of a vehicle while prohibited stem from an incident on June 22, just before 6 p.m. On that date, Punnichy RCMP were called to the George Gordon First Nation after a truck had struck a child and left. EMS declared the one-year-old boy deceased on scene.
Police launched a search for Poorman, notifying the public of what happened, and a description of their suspect. RCMP caught up with Poorman, arresting him at a home in Cold Lake, Alta. the next day.
It is anticipated that Poorman’s next appearance on Aug. 8 will be for a bail hearing.
