Flour mill fire caused by machine malfunction, causes $5M damage

The fire spread through the mill process piping.

SASKATOON – The fire at a flour mill on 33rd Street East on Friday was caused by a malfunction of a machine on the fourth floor and caused more than $5 million in damage, say Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD).

The fire spread through the mill process piping and went to the sixth floor, which sustained significant damage.

Saskatoon Police Service helped firefighters through the use of their drone to assess the roof areas of the mill.

The fire was a two-alarm fire and SFD had dispatched two engines, a ladder truck, a rescue truck, and the Battalion Chief. Less than an hour later, SFD sent two more engines, a ladder truck, and Command 9.

The extreme cold weather was a challenge for firefighters.
