SASKATOON – A man who was arrested by Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) Guns and Gangs unit was granted bail Jan. 10 in Saskatoon Provincial Court.

When Shawn Emile James Vermette, 28, was arrested Jan. 5, police say that he was reaching for a machete in his pants during a physical altercation with officers. Officers used a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) to subdue and arrest him.

SPS Guns and Gangs Unit had spotted him near 22nd Street West and Avenue O on Jan. 10 and knew he was wanted on warrants for other charges.

Vermette was charged with assaulting a peace officer, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a prohibited weapon. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant at the time on a charge of possession of stolen property under $5,000.

He is due back in Saskatoon court Feb. 1.
