The Yorkton Storm Speed Swimming team competed in three meets leading up to the holidays.
The first meet the club attended was their own sixth annual IceBreaker Meet in Yorkton.
Six swim clubs from around the province attended the meet and swam against the 24 YSSC Swimmers that competed in the event.
Nine local swimmers found their way to the podium at this meet. Jacob Baker led the way with gold in the 50m Breast and 50m Backstroke. He added a silver in the 50m Freestyle, along with bronzes in the 50m Fly, 100m Breaststroke, and 200m Individual Medley.
Anna Bulych chipped in with a silver in the 200m Freestyle while her older sister Matlyn finished the meet with four golds in the 100m Breast, 400m Free, 50m Breast, and 50m Free. Â
Cassidy Flasch was completely golden at the meet capturing gold in all five of her swims, triumphing in the 50m Back, Fly, and Free, 100m Breast, and 200m Free.
Bryant Jones swam his way to four medals. He won gold in the 200m Free, silver in the 50m Back, and bronze in the 50m Free, and 100m Free.
Tyana Katzell won three gold medals in the 50m Fly, Free and 100m Free, Ella Kozak came home with four podium finishes, gold in the 100m and 200m Free, second in the 50m Free, and third in the 100m Back while Ostap Kucherha finished third in the 50m Free.
Tea Rohatensky rounded out the medal winners with a gold in the 50m Free, silver in the 100m Free, and bronze in the 50m Breast. Â
Reagan Morrison won the Storm Chaser Award at this meet. She had an overall improvement of 6.27 seconds over five races at the meet.
The team also attended the RYMM/MJKFF Fall Freeze Out Meet in Regina with five swimmers returning home with hardware. Baker won a silver in the 50m Back, and bronze in the 50m Fly. Matlyn Bulych captured four silvers in the 50m Free, 100m Breast, Free, and 200m Free, she also won a bronze in the 400m Free. Jones won bronze in the 50m Back while Katzell won bronze in the 100m Breast. Â
Ella Kozak rounded out the medal winners with a gold in the 400m Free, 100m Free, and 200m Free. She also won a bronze in the 50m Free.
Connor Watrych showed and overall improvement of 7.48 seconds over the course of six swims to win the Storm Chaser Award.
The final meet attended by the club prior to Christmas was the Goldfins Santa Invite Swim Meet in Saskatoon. Five swimmers medalled at this meet. Baker turned in second place performances in the 50m Fly, and Breast and added a bronze in the 50m Free, and 100m Fly and Free.
Matlyn Bulych won the 100 Fly and 50m Breast and settled for a silver in the 50m Fly.
Randi Jones came home with two bronze medals in the 50m Fly and Breast while Ella Kozak won gold in the 400m Free and 200m IM, she also added a bronze in the 50m Free, 100m Fly and Free. Ella had an overall improvement of 4.96 seconds in the five events she swam at the meet.
Jennifer Haczkewicz won gold in the 50m Free and 50m Back.
She also won bronze in the 400m Free, an event where she set a new club record for the distance, previously set in 1988. It’s Haczkewicz’s second club record as she also broke the record in the 200m IM in the 15-Over Girls’ category while attending the Prairie Winter International Meet in Winnipeg. The previous record of Danielle Ozirny’s was set in 1998.
