The Yorkton Storm Swim Club sent ten swimmers to the Short Course ‘A’ Provincial Championships in Moose Jaw this past weekend. The group of ten had to qualify for the meet by swimming an ‘A’ time in a previous meet. The team had a fantastic meet bringing home 21 medals, setting four club records, and qualifying two more swimmers for the upcoming ‘AA’ Man-Sask Championships.

Jacob Baker lead the parade to the podium winning five medals. Baker came home with gold in the 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley (IM).  He added silver in the 50m freestyle along with two bronze in the 50m and 100m backstroke events.

Bryant Jones was golden in the 50m butterfly and freestyle.  He was silver in the 200m freestyle and captured a bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Andriy Usan and Cassidy Flasch each came home with three medals.

Usan’s medals came in the 100m Free where he struck gold, along with two silver medals in the 50m Fly and 200m Free.

Flasch won gold in the 50m Back, along with silver in the 100m Fly and bronze in the 100m Back. Usan was also awarded the ‘Storm Chaser Award’ for improving an average of 9.49seconds over the course of the 6 swims he swam in Moose Jaw.

Matlyn Bulych came home with two medals as did her training partner Ella Kozak. Bulych swam for gold in the 50m Free and captured bronze in the 100m IM while Kozak won silver in the 200m IM and a bronze in the 400m Free.

Connor Watrych won the bronze in the 50 m Fly.

Anna Bulych teamed up with Alexandra Poncelet, Matlyn Bulych and Ella Kozak to win silver in the 200m Free Relay.

The youngest Bulych then took it upon herself to rewrite the ‘8 & Under YSSC Record Book’ at the swim meet and by the end of the meet she had broken four club records.

She bettered her previous mark in the 50m Free by just under a second. The 100m Free record is now hers, after she shaved four seconds off the record formerly held by Gloria Liebrecht from back in 1985.

She then went on to take eight seconds off of the 200m Free and 14 seconds off of the 100m Back, both records previously held by Ella Kozak.

The next meet that the club will compete in takes place in Saskatoon, the ‘AA’ Man-Sask Championships. Swimmers had to qualify for this meet by swimming at least one ‘AA’ time in a previous meet. A record number of six swimmers have qualified for the meet, the most ever in Head Coach Ashley Benko’s tenure.

Jennifer Haczkewicz, Jacob Baker, Cassidy Flasch and Ella Kozak had already qualified for the meet. They are now joined by Matlyn Bulych who swam two ‘AA’ times at provincials and Andriy Usan who swam one ‘AA’ time at the meet.
