The 2015 YRHS Junior Curling bonspiel was held this past weekend at the Yorkton Curling Club in the Gallagher Centre.
Over 30 different junior curling teams from several different communities took part in the event, participating in one of three tournaments: Mixed, Boys or Girls.
The Saltcoats rink, consisting of skip Katya Andersen, third Gregor Farquharson, second Sean Easton and leads Payton Corkum and Katelyn Farquharson, took the Mixed gold medal at the event, defeating Ituna in the final 7-0. Ituna took the silver medal while Stockholm rounded out the podium with a third place finish.
Both Yorkton high schools, the YRHS and Sacred Heart, also came away with gold medals.
Sacred’s gold was won by the girls’ team. A split squad, two Sacred girls, Sarah Sutter (third) and Ariana Struble (second), teamed up with St. Michael’s girls Ashley Schrader (skip) and Mia Cottenie (lead) to down Ituna in the gold medal game 4-3 thanks to a perfectly played sixth end that included a measurement to see whether or not the Sacred girls won or tied the game.
The measurement went the way of the Saints, giving them the gold medal. Ituna finished second while the YRHS took bronze.
The YRHS boys’ team, made up of skip Adam Srochenski, third Dylan Novak, second Kaito Farquharson and lead Griffin Richard, as well as spare Braden Kitchen, bested their Yorkton rivals from Sacred Heart 6-5 in the boys’ final.
Sacred Heart took silver while Norquay finished off the top three with a bronze medal performance.
This bonspiel completed the Junior high school curling season for both the YRHS and SHHS rinks.
