The YRHS senior girls basketball team opened their 2011-12 season hosting a four-team tournament over the weekend.
Game 1 was a hard fought 52-49 victory over the Weyburn Eagles. Trailing by one point at the half and overcoming a plethora of turnovers, the Raiders rode Raelene Nagy's strong inside game and some sharp shooting by Brandey Blahut to emerge with a three-point win.
They built an eight point lead into the fourth quarter. Both Nagy and Blahut hit clutch shots late to secure the win. Nagy double doubled with 29 points and 18 rebounds while Blahut finished off with 12 points.
Freshman Morgan Sapara had a solid 35 minutes contributing 10 rebounds and chipped in with five points.
Game 2 had the Raiders take on the Nipawin Bears on Saturday morning. The Raiders jumped out early and never looked back en route to a 68-22 victory.
Nagy had another dominant game with 32 points and 22 rebounds. Blahut and Sapara each had 11 points.
Game 3 was the final game, putting the Raiders against their rivals the Melville Cobras.
They trailed early and were behind by 10 points at the half. The Raiders fought back to tie the game at 38-38.
Costly turnovers led to several three point shots by the Cobras led them to a 57-50 win. Robyn Bendfeld pulled down 12 rebounds to go with 13 points and Blahut scored 16 with eight rebounds. Kaylynn Boyda had 10 points.
