The YRHS Raiders senior boys’ basketball team had a rough go of it this past weekend at the Centennial Charger Charity Classic basketball tournament in Saskatoon.
The Raiders went 0-3 through three games, falling to Saskatoon’s Walter Murray Marauders 61-38 in their opening game of the tournament to fall to the ‘B’ side despite a strong showing by two grade 10 players, Matthew Mandziuk (11 points) and Matthew Balysky (nine points). “They’re (Walter Murray) a top four team maybe top six team in Saskatoon so it was a decent result for us considering,” said YRHS head coach Jason Payne. “We didn’t play poorly but we struggled to score a little bit to start the year and it continued on in that game.”
Once in the ‘B’ side the Raiders continued to struggle, losing to the Aden Bowman Bears 61-45 and the Moose Jaw – Central Cyclones 74-55 to finish with an overall record of 0-3. “Those are teams that we should be capable of competing with,” suggested Payne, continuing, “hopefully we learned some stuff about how we need to be prepared to go out to play and the price we need to pay and being ready when it’ time to be ready.”
Tyson Black led the team in scoring in their final two games, putting up 13 points in each contest while Caleb Bymak (vs Aden Bowman) had 10 points and Balysky (vs Central) had 10.
